Santa Teresa: a small slice of heave

Sometimes life gets overwhelming living in a city. For me, the most powerful and simple cure to detox from the fast pace of life is to head towards a more relaxed pace in nature. Thankfully, living in Costa Rica I am surrounded by unspoiled, lush tropical terrain with mountains, rainforest, volcanoes, and my personal favorite: sandy beaches with warm waters. A recent adventure took me to Nicoya Peninsula, one of the worlds 5 Blue Zones: a geographical area where people live the healthiest and longest lives.

I headed to the southern tip of the peninsula to visit friends living in Santa Teresa. Traveling dirt roads and passing small local shops surrounded by open, grassy pastures containing healthy cows, brought me towards the coastal beach towns. As I approached Santa Teresa I sensed a familiar energetic high of being in a new place, and felt excited when I saw the town was only one main road, conveniently adjacent to the blue Pacific coastline. My senses were filled with new colors, smells and sensations. It was as if I could feel the city stress and smog fade away as I began to breathe in the pure air and rest my eyes on new terrain.

I spent my days soaking up the sunshine and local flavours of Santa Teresa. Boutique hotels, bakeries, wellness centers, hostels, organic cafe's, juice bars & design shops sprinkle the main street and hidden dirt pathways. At sunrise the beach becomes a playground for surfers, swimmers, walkers happy beach muts who run alongside. A local organic market comes alive once a week boasting fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade cheeses, yogurt, natural food products and artesian goods. After sunset, bonfires line the beach where old & new friends gather. Live music seeps through the doorways of restaurants where you can hear all styles - from reggae, classical Indian, latin groove to gypsy folk. There is something for everyone here. Santa Teresa is a small slice of heaven with its eclectic atmosphere and bohemian charm.

I soon felt the local flavour is actually an international blend of like-minded people from all across the globe, sprinkled with Costa Rican charm. The community is full of surfers, yogis and nature lovers who enjoy a slower pace of life in a foreign context. For the small size of this beach village, it certainly does not lack culture. There are Costa Ricans, Mexicans, Argentinians, Danes, Belgians, French, Americans, Israelis (just to name a few) all living, playing and cultivating along side one another.

The area truly radiates positivity and manifests relaxed beach vibes. I asked my friends what they loved most about living in Santa Teresa, their answers were simple: 'waking up to the sights and sounds of nature in one of the most beautiful places in the world, while being surrounded by a vibrant International community of people who are all looking for health & happiness.'

Santa Teresa is a unique corner of the world which is rich in energy, tropical vibes and invites you to reconnect to yourself and others in the most simple and real ways - through shared experiences of sunshine and waves, yoga, art & music and great food. It is an absolute gem which I will most definitely be returning to over the years to come!
