Eating mindfully lies in what and how we eat. It doesn't matter whether the diet is vegan, raw or paleo, mindful eating is all about creating a healthy, sustainable diet. Equally as important to the food you ingest is the 'how'  you ingest, and is quite possibly more important than what is being served on your plate. Mindful eating habits nourish your body, mind and soul and help you to digest your food properly, from a place of relaxation and presence. Eating mindfully becomes a powerful practice of self-care.

Like with any practice, eating mindfully requires continual awareness to create healthier habits. I follow these three easy steps to remember that how I eat is an extremely important part of my diet, and since I love eating, it is also an extremely important part of my overall lifestyle!

The Before

Preparing food is as much a part of the diet as actually eating. Try to spend at least 10 minutes preparing your meals. You will notice that the more thought and energy you actually invest in the preparation of the food, the better it tastes.

Once you have finished preparing your meal – stop! Take a moment and look at your food to be grateful and appreciate it. You can do that in whatever way feels most natural – close your eyes and silently give thanks to the food in front of you, repeat a mantra or take a few deep breaths. Even taking a beautiful picture and posting it on instagram can be your way of showing appreciation and gratitude!

The During

From the kitchen to the table, the real challenge is in consciously eating without multitasking.  This means no instagram scrolling, no Netflix on the side and definitely no working on the side. Technology pulls us out of presence, therefor distracting us from our sensations...you have just prepared a delicious meal, enjoy it wholeheartedly with all your senses!

That doesn't mean you have to be alone to stay present with your food -- not at all! Enjoying food with the company of loved ones is a beautiful way to enjoy your meals. Sharing food with others is one of the oldest traditions and creates a collective celebration of sharing in nourishment and pleasure.

The After

Finish (and I really mean finish!) your last bite and wait a little moment before rushing off the table! Feel the sensations of your body and filled stomach. It is an amazing feeling – make sure to appreciate it and acknowledge that healthful and delicious food every day is a choice and practice. Healthy food nourishes the body and the way you eat your food has the power to nourish the mind and soul.
