I plummet into the water after being tossed from the face of a wave. My body is flipping and twisting. I’m not sure which way is up and which way is down. I’m reaching with my arms, hoping to feel the surface, but the washing machine actions continue, and I continue flailing. Deeper I sink from the force of the rolling white water. Then finally, I feel the sand below me. I kick off from the sand as hard as possible to jet myself back up to the light above. Gasping for air at the top, I look ahead, only to find myself being knocked back down. Here I am again being tumbled, but this time a voice chimes in whispering, “surrender, relax, surrender, let go, surrender, go with it…”
The Ocean has taught me to surrender, to let go of resistance. When being bumbled by a wave the typical reaction is to fight your way to the surface. Yet in the fight, you use up all of your oxygen and energy. I have found in releasing this resistance, relaxing the body, and calming the mind, you save oxygen and energy. Relaxing into the fall actually allows the water to help you resurface. If you have ever tried floating in a pool, you know that buoyancy is created when you are completely relaxed. The minute you start kicking the legs and flailing the arms, your buoyancy is disturbed.
We have all been in a place of resistance at one time or another. When we fight against what is actually occurring. When we want that breath of fresh air so badly that we stand in our own way. At the time it seems we are helping ourselves out of the washing machine, but when we look back, we realize we were only mucking up the waters. When resisting what is, we only create more resistance. Try surrendering, save your energy, save your oxygen, and watch how you emerge back to the surface with the strength and ability to move forward.
