Gaia is the Greek personification of Mother Earth, one of the primordial deities and the great mother who created and gave life to the Universe. She encourages the planet, provides purpose and makes life possible. Gaia possesses the powers of maternity: creation, abundance, support, nourishment, wisdom & eternal love.
While 'Gaia' may be her form in Greek mythology, when in India she is worshipped as 'Shakti', she reigns as 'Pachamama' in the Andes, in Egypt she is 'Hathor' and when she resides in a Catholic church she is known as 'Virgin Mary'.
The list of deities is endless. Indigenous cultures are deeply rooted in the Earth’s well-being as they honor Gaia through their own unique spiritual practices. In some parts of the world, ancient rituals are still very much alive and offer us thousand year old teachings and inspiration. Our ancestors knew that true well-being depends upon our ability to align ourselves with the natural cycles of the Universe and rhythms of nature.
Hiking a rocky mountain, meditating on a cliff while watching the sunset drop into the horizon or standing under a rushing waterfall can be some of life's most exhilarating and freeing moments. We are instantaneously brought back into the present moment and experience a remembrance of what our true essence really is. Mother Nature is powerful, energizing and deeply grounding.
Simple ways to cultivate an abundance of Nature (even when we feel far from her) is through our awareness, intention and daily rituals:
- Create sacred spaces throughout your home with treasures from Nature (rocks, shells, driftwood)
- Open windows for more natural light
- Explore your neighborhood/city for community gardens or wild flowers to cut for your kitchen
- Read your book or journal outside in the grass near trees
- Go for walks without your cell phone
- Eat fresh, seasonal foods and learn the benefits of each fruit/veg/herb
- Create an indoor garden - succulents are low maintenance and so beautiful for table tops!
We don't have to find ourselves on the top of a pristine mountain to feel nature's profound presence. Shift your perception of how you can 'experience nature' in the unlikely places and allow each day to be a new opportunity to align yourself with well-being.
